Alnwick 1’s vs Durham University 3’s
Result: Alnwick 1-4 Durham University 3’s
Match Ball Sponsor – M.G. Courty
It was the second home match of the season for Alnwick 1 ladies, hoping to win their first game of the season, in front of local supporters.
From the first pass back Alnwick took control and started strong. Alnwick attacked with quick, one touch passing from Smales to Murray – allowing Murray to sweep the ball into the goal within the first ten minutes of the game.
Alnwick kept possession very well linking the defence to attackers. Pettifer, Murray and Trotter had good runs of play with strong attacks but Durham stayed strong in defence, clearing all attempts at goal. Pringle came on and kept the tempo of the game high pushing the attack forward but Durham’s strong tackling prevented Alnwick from finding the back of the net.
Durham university tried to use aerial balls to gain ground but Alnwick reacted quickly and with control this was brought down safely by Murray who continued pushing forward on the left.
Alnwick were confident to switch the play with solid linking of passes between Young, Payne, Reed and Murray allowing attacking play up the left side. However Durham were quick to get behind the ball and defend and didn’t give Alnwick time on the ball.
The intensity of the tackling brought about a green card for Young who later got a knock to the hand.
Alnwick defensive short corners with Graham, Young, Payne, Reed and Lapham managed to disrupt Durhams set penalty corner routine, to keep the ball out of the goal, for the first thirty five minutes. With the score reflecting this at half time 1-0 to Alnwick.
Durham had travelled with a full squad of players rolling on and off substitutes compared to Alnwick’s squad of 12 players and this became evident. With Durham having more fresh legs they started to dominate with goals in quick succession from open play and penalty corners.
The midfield constantly worked hard with Courty having some good runs down the right laying the ball off to Trotter, who charged towards the attacking ‘D’. Pettifer also had a close call with the goalie on a one on one basis narrowly missing out on scoring a goal.
Durham University continued to dominate with the defence coming under increasing pressure and Alnwick conceding a number of penalty corners. Although Alnwick’s defense managed to clear the first shots on goal Durham regained control of play, attacking down the middle, and despite excellent defending from Payne and Lapham Durham were relentless and allowed them to further capitalise on their lead.
Durham University sustained an injury which allowed Alnwick time to regroup and they changed formation to try and create more chances. This saw Pettifer intercept a ball from Durham University’s hit out to create an opportunity on goal however the game was now out of their reach and ended 1-4 to Durham University 3’s.
Although it was a loss for Alnwick it was an improvement on previous games through increased possession, more attacking play and shots on goal.
